Patan and The Bodhnath Stupa

Every time you turn there is another stupa, statue or shrine that looks thousands of years old, and often they are. Yesterday we visited the largest Buddhist stupa in Nepal, dating back to 600AD. It is located in the center of a large Tibetan community and is surrounded by several monasteries. Around 5pm the community flocks to the stupa to walk around it in circles meditating. Without planning it suddenly we were surrounded by monks and townspeople praying, meditating and walking around and around the stupa.

We have acclimated to the constant harassment of “hello, how are you, where are you going, where are you from.” In fact, after relaxing a bit we have had some really cool interactions. Yesterday a guy asked me with hand out, “You want to buy?” I said no, and he replied, you don’t even know what it is. I said, “It’s Tiger Balm!” He admitted that I was right and then asked while miming, “Do you play flute?”
Me: “No, do you?”
Him: “Yes.”
Me: Miming playing a drum kit “I play the drums”
Him: “You know Nepalese drum?”
Me: Miming, “ Yes, like this.”
Him: “Yes, I have one. How older are you?”
Me: “26”
Him: “Oh. Okay, bye bye.”
Me: “Bye bye.”

Today we saw a funny painting. It was an abstract painting of a girl with a young boy slung from her back. Below it said, “ Girl walks while fondling her brother.”
About 2 hours later we saw a big gas tanker truck that said, “Highly Inflammable.”
